How to be engaging?
Published May 27, 2024
“But my child does not want to read!” Said no parent ever. Yea right!
If this resonates, sit tight. We’re going to spell out a recipe to get your child to follow instructions. It works on toddlers. It works every time.
Here are the wise words from a veteran kindergarden teacher. Use this recipe to take back control and watch them grow.
TL;DR
This is a recipe. Perform it each time. Always 1-on-1.
- Calm space, fully engaged.
- Lead with clarity.
- Provide a fun reward.
Let’s break it down
Take a deep breath. Settle in. You are in control.
1. Connect; get in their space
- Sit face-to-face
- Get close
- Establish eye contact
- Establish physical contact
2. Dictate with tone and energy
- Come in calm and confident
- Give yourself room to grow
3. Lead with clarity
- Tell them what’s going to happen
- Give them something fun afterwards
- Give direction
An example
Engage by entering their space.
Remember that kids don’t have a bubble like adults, so get really close.
Take a deep breath.
Make eye contact and touch them on the shoulder.
Tell: “We’re going to practice 5 letters, then we’re going to watch Bluey. Now we’re going to read.”
Give direction: “This letter says …”
Where 90% get it wrong
- Avoid putting a question at the end “let’s read. Okay?”
- Questions mean they have a choice.
- Only give choice when it doesn’t matter. “Want to read here or there?”
Tell, don’t ask.
